#iamRefuge: Sam

from fear to faith

I walked away from my Catholic upbringing during my teenage years—purely because it had never engaged me and I was bored. I spent the next few years partying and studying non-stop like most students.

Then, just before my 21st birthday, I was suddenly plagued with a severe anxiety disorder, which left me crippled and barely able to leave the house. In my mess I was desperate to try anything—after no relief from medication or counselling—and started tagging along to church with Paul (then my boyfriend now husband) in the hope that it would help.

Over those next few months my whole life was changed by God and has never been the same since. God, through prayer and His presence changed my fear to faith and He healed me. I have vowed to follow Him with my whole life and it has been the most joyous, hope-filled journey, and the best decision I have ever made.

how did you come to be part of Refuge?

Myself and Paul heard a talk about Refuge, when the church was first planted, while attending a church on the other side of the city. We decided to get plugged into our local church and have attended Refuge ever since.

What are some of the things you think are really great about Refuge?

The people! The emphasis on community and that you become part of a giant family.

How are you involved in life at Refuge?

Currently, I serve mainly on the worship team, singing or playing music. Myself and Paul also lead one of the church's weekly community groups.

what about Refuge encourages your faith?

My personal faith has grown dramatically since joining Refuge—having other believers supporting and encouraging my walk with God every week. Also, the solid Bible teaching and worship, as well as hearing stories of how God is moving in the life of our church family.

How do you feel you can use your gifts at Refuge to serve God?

God deserves to be worshipped and so simply using the ability He has given me to sing and play music at Refuge is how I serve Him.

If you could tell anyone Just one thing about Refuge?

We are a FAMILY!..........and you are so welcome to join us!
