developing my relationship with God
From a young age I was encouraged to attend church with my family—the older I got, the less I wanted to go (being side-tracked by ‘worldly distractions’). All along thinking I’m a kind, patient and generous individual—surely I’ll make it into heaven, after all Jesus died for us on the cross so all our sins may be forgiven.
From my mid-teens to mid-twenties the only time I stepped foot in church was for family occasions. However, this all changed when I met my wife and her family. A new ‘type’ of church initially became a bi-weekly occurrence with the in-laws, then a weekly occurrence, and now I’m involved in serving for the church.
The way God works truly is great—how he is continually at work in the background, sometimes unbeknown to you, to encourage and guide you in unbelievable ways! Over the past two or so years I have been given signs that have encouraged me to read, act and grow in my faith—to develop my relationship with God.
how did you come to be part of Refuge?
Having moved into a house in Newlands after getting married, my wife and I tried a few churches in the local vicinity, and having decided the church we were attending in Ayrshire was no longer suitable, we were encouraged to join our brother & sister-in-law (at Refuge). We immediately felt welcomed when approached by members/elders of the church, including the minister.
What are some of the things you think are really great about Refuge?
The sense of family within the church is something that draws me back time and time again; everyone is so kind and welcoming. Whatever you are experiencing there is always someone to pray with/for you – everyone has one common interest—Jesus.
How are you involved in life at Refuge?
I’ve recently started helping with set-up/tear down of the equipment as well as running the slides/sound once a month. This allows me to give something back.
what about Refuge encourages your faith?
The weekly ‘share time’ at the start of the service encourages me in my faith—hearing about what is going on in my friends lives (good or bad) and how God has answered prayers and given guidance is great.
How do you feel you can use your gifts at Refuge to serve God?
Being technically-minded, my skills are being well utilised on sound and slides. Sometimes it’s good just simply to listen and be there for your church family.
If you could tell anyone Just one thing about Refuge?
Refuge is like no other church I’ve ever been to: the atmosphere, incredible people and enthusiasm for Jesus—is like no other.
Come along and see it for yourself!
